Poole's Lament

for String Quartet (midi rendition)

Notes for Scotland

Rod Poole was a British expatriate who produced an important body of music on his Just Intonation guitar that he had refretted to play his own 17 tone scale. Working in different intonation systems was something that we shared and compared constantly, as often we acted as being a mutual support system. At the time of his tragic death by another in 2007 he was working on the arrangement of a set of Irish tunes. One of these tunes “ The Hunter’s Purse” is the basis of this composition. It seems fitting in my first visit to his homeland that I bring something back as if I in a sense returning him to his country. The piece contemplates his passing in the gradual removal of more and more elements of the tune, in the same way he might have experienced his last musical thoughts. It also gives us a moment to reflect on the memory of all those we have known who have passed away.
