JOSE HALES-GARCIA
2025 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Born in New York City in the 1950s and raised in Los Angeles, Euro-Afro-Caribbean Jose Hales-Garcia had a keen ear for the world, pop, television and movie music he had been hearing since birth. Drawn to all forms of artistic expression, Jose found the process of working in visual mediums too slow to express his immediate emotional needs. Music was more to his liking.
Jose studied with Erv Wilson and co-founded the microtonal rock band Cipher. Through Erv and John Chalmers, Jose discovered he enjoyed math and computer programming. In 1990, Jose left the music world to do "normal" things, but during his musical hiatus, Jose always worked quietly on music. Now, like a phoenix, Jose returns to the music world with microtonal compositions to share. He hopes to transmit the emotional depths that stir him and music that reminds us that we are all connected.
