MUSIC OF DANTE ROSATI
2022 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Dante writes "My first exposure to microtonality was probably hearing some recordings of Partch compositions while in high school. Later, while attending Mannes College of Music I went to a concert by David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in upper Manhattan. My jaw (and ears) hit the floor! Then, while getting my Masters degree at the Juilliard School, Danlee Mitchell brought the Partch instruments to Juilliard to mount a production of Revelation in the Courthouse Park and in that production I played Adapted Guitar I (they even let me take it home to practice on!). However, it wasn’t until several years later that, upon hearing a recording of Lou Harrison playing his piano pieces “Incidental Music for Corneille’s Cinna,” I first understood how new harmonic colors could be created using JI and was then inspired to refret a guitar and start exploring. Some of those explorations can be found on my youtube channel and my website. More recently I have begun writing for virtual instruments as well, in order to further explore musical possibilities of the scale that nature gave us: the harmonic series."
